National Fish Filleting Champs
Have you ever seen a professional fish filleter (knife-hand) in action??Top Knife-hands from throughout NZ are invited to participate in the National Filleting Championships to be held on the ‘Are you Game’ Stage on Monday afternoon. The Auckland Championships will be held on Sunday afternoon.
Participants race to fillet a 25 kilogram bin snapper or tarakihi as fast as possible whilst still being careful to minimise wastage. Fillets must first be cut from the fish, skinned and then boned. Competitors are marked on time taken, appearance of fillets and recovery (percentage of fillet recovered per kg of whole fish).
Both men and women compete in the same category, the Auckland event held last year was won by a female competitor.
It is a spectacle not to be missed………..Last year it proved to be the most watched event on the competition stage!
